A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO
A & W SINCLAIR Ltd
PUBLIC WORKS CONTRACTORS
& QUARRY SUPPLIERS
A & W Sinclair Ltd is a family run business which was first founded by Alexander Sinclair (Great Grandfather of the present owner William Sinclair) in 1922. A fourth generation Sinclair now works within the firm (Stuart, son of William) together with 2 of William’s brothers – making this a truly family run business. The firm started as a haulage business and progressed in the late 70’s to civil engineering works. Seven years ago we acquired Ruther Quarry, Watten situated in the centre of Caithness. This quarry supplies a full range of quarry materials to private customers, farmers, building contractors, The Highland Council, Scottish Water etc. and provides employment for 3 full time operatives. We also run our own fleet of lorries and offer an efficient delivery service for quarry materials.
At the helm of A & W Sinclair Ltd is William Sinclair with his wife Julie being responsible for the general day to day office activities. William is responsible for estimating contracts, liaising with clients, site supervision and works along side his employees on site. We are approved contractors for Scottish Water and have completed many projects as main contractor on their behalf. Our operatives are experienced in both open trench and pipe bursting methods of pipe laying (utilising our own grundoburst pipe bursting machine together with our chlorination/de-chlorination plant). We are experienced in the construction of Waste Water Treatments Works i.e. reed bed systems. We also undertake works for The Highland Council – small building works, road works, kerbing/path works, demolitions, bridge maintenance, bridge/culvert replacement etc. We have had almost 30 years experience in civil engineering works here in Caithness/Sutherland and currently employ 13 operatives on site.
A recent addition to our firm is a new system for delivering ready mix concrete – a fully computerised truck mounted volumetric mixer which can produce fresh concrete of any mix design, produced on any site, delivering accuracy of within plus or minus one per cent at a rate of up to 1M3 of fresh concrete being produced every two minutes. This is an environmentally sound method of producing and delivering concrete.
We have recently purchased Melvich Sand & Gravel Quarry which has a vast resource of quality sand and gravel. This quarry was instrumental in the supplying of materials for the building of the Dounreay nuclear plant in the 1950s. This quality sand & gravel is utilised in our volumetric ready mix concrete dispenser ensuring a steady supply of quality materials.
